Opportunities From: Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County

Volunteers read one-to-one to Kindergarten students at Hagen Road Elementary School in Boynton Beach. The Literacy Coalition has selected books and created activities for volunteers and students to share together each session.  All books and activity materials will be distributed to volunteers upon arrival at the school.  The students get to take home the books and activities.

Pre-registration through Raptor Volunteers is a requirement of Palm Beach County School District every 12 months.

Tutor two to three first or second grade students, one-on-one, in reading comprehension at selected schools throughout Palm Beach County. Tutoring occurs during regular school hours.  Hours vary by school location.  Volunteers are asked to commit to two tutor sessions per week, 60–90-minute sessions (or team up with another volunteer and each one tutors one session per week). 

There is a minimum of 30 tutoring sessions per student in a school year.

Support our mission by participating in various behind-the scenes volunteer opportunities with the Literacy Coalition.  Teen volunteers may help with labeling books, unpacking boxes of books, shelving and other duties as needed.  Availability and dates/times needed will vary.

All volunteers who wish to volunteer with the Building Better Readers program as a tutor for elementary school aged children in the School District of Palm Beach County, are required to attend a training program.  This program has been developed in conjunction with the Palm Beach County School District.   The training is offered by the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County on various dates throughout the year.  

Our next training will be on Monday, May 11, 2026, 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM at the Literacy Coalition.  The training site is located at 3651 Quantum Blvd in Boynton Beach.  This specific session will be preparing tutors for summer tutoring opportunities as well as in school, starting with the 2026-27 school year.

Tutor two students, one-on-one, in reading comprehension After school tutoring takes place in one of three locations:  The Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County, the Main Library in West Palm Beach and the Lantana Public Library in Lake Worth.  Tutoring occurs after school, between the hours of 3:30pm and 5:30pm. 

Commit to tutor at least fifteen hours during the school year. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.  Training is required.

Tutor two students, one-on-one, in reading comprehension.  This is a virtual volunteer opportunity.  The volunteer tutor and parent will work together to determine a schedule that works for both. Volunteers and students meet via Zoom or Google Meet.

Commit to tutor at least 15 hours during the school year.  Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.  Training is required.

Many children and students served by our literacy programs may not have appropriate books to read in their homes. The Coalition’s goal is to provide them with quality children’s books to practice reading at home, helping them improve their literacy skills and develop a love of reading, books, and learning. You can help by organizing a book drive or donating new and gently used books in excellent condition for preschool-age children and elementary-grade-level students served by the Literacy Coalition’s programs.
