Volunteer: VIRTUALLY Tutor a Child in Reading Comprehension

Tutor two students, one-on-one, in reading comprehension.  This is a virtual volunteer opportunity.  The volunteer tutor and parent will work together to determine a schedule that works for both. Volunteers and students meet via Zoom or Google Meet.

Commit to tutor at least 15 hours during the school year.  Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.  Training is required as well as a Background Check.

Volunteer: Attend Training to Become a Volunteer Tutor

All volunteers who wish to volunteer with the Building Better Readers program as a tutor for elementary school aged children in the School District of Palm Beach County, are required to attend a training program.  This program has been developed in conjunction with the Palm Beach County School District.   The training is offered by the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County on various dates throughout the year.  

Our next training will be on Monday, May 11, 2026, 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM at the Literacy Coalition.  The training site is located at 3651 Quantum Blvd in Boynton Beach.  This specific session will be preparing tutors for summer tutoring opportunities as well as in school, starting with the 2026-27 school year.

Support our mission by participating in various behind-the scenes volunteer opportunities with the Literacy Coalition.  Volunteers may help with labeling books, unpacking boxes of books, shelving and other duties as needed.  Availability and dates/times needed will vary.

Building on the success of Building Better Readers, supporting students in 1st through 4th grade, we are expanding to include older students.  Help us grow a tutoring program for middle grade struggling readers in 5th through 8th grade.  Work one-on-one or with a small group of youth once or twice per week, during or after school hours, in-person or virtually, to increase their reading skills. Volunteers will select what works best for their schedule.  Join us for an introductory training session on Thursday, May 7th from 9:00am - 12:00pm to learn more and get started.

Many children and students served by our literacy programs may not have appropriate books to read in their homes. The Coalition’s goal is to provide them with quality children’s books to practice reading at home, helping them improve their literacy skills and develop a love of reading, books, and learning. You can help by organizing a book drive or donating new and gently used books in excellent condition for preschool-age children and elementary-grade-level students served by the Literacy Coalition’s programs.
